Higher quality of care and support to psychiatric patients

The DREAM THEATRE initiative stands as a beacon of European cooperation under the Erasmus+ umbrella, bringing together six partners spanning across Italy, Spain, Serbia, Poland, and Iceland.

This collaboration, rooted in a common goal, seeks to combat the multifaceted challenges of mental health and social inclusion faced by psychiatric patients.

Their approach is distinctive, leveraging the power of theater and drama therapy to effect change and address these profound societal issues.

DREAM THEATRE endeavors to share best practices, empower cultural and healthcare professionals, and shine a much-needed spotlight on mental health concerns across Europe.

The project’s objectives are ambitious yet crucial for fostering long-term progress and change among its participant organizations. Through a range of activities and outcomes, DREAM THEATRE aims to equip these partners with essential skills, tools, and an expansive network, setting the stage for continuous development. Their strategy promises not only to enhance the services offered in dramatherapy but also to inspire the establishment of new partnerships.

Key target groups

Psychiatric patients facing therapeutic treatment

Provide them with new opportunities to develop key skills and competences for their social inclusion, involving them in the local brainstorming for the definition of training contents, in the local Upskill Labs and in the staging of the local theatre performances, in which they will be fully engaged as part of the team mounting the production, supported by the healthcare providers’ staff involved in the project.

Cultural operators and healthcare workers from PPs organization

As medium to achieve the social inclusion of psychiatric patients, being the main TG of the training on transversal skills to promote the participation and upskill of psychiatric patients through drama therapy, being involved in the TWG for the elaboration of the Model for Integrated Management of Dramatherapy services, in the networking activities and in supporting the psychiatric patients in staging the performances.

Project objectives

Main Objectives

 Social Inclusion and New Learning Opportunities in Drama Therapy ErasmusPlus.

1. Project management

Social Inclusion and Upskilling: Create opportunities for social inclusion for psychiatric patients through drama therapy, providing accessible and high-quality educational pathways and skills for effective participation.

2. Learning opportunities

Awareness and Fighting Stigma: Raise awareness about mental health and combat stigma using patient-staged theater performances to promote interaction with the audience and address the stigmatization of psychiatric issues.

3. Transnational model of dramatherapy services

Development of Transversal Skills: Develop complementary and transversal skills for cultural and healthcare operators through training on drama therapy as a therapeutic tool.

4. Networking

Exchange of Best Practices: Promote dialogue between cultural and healthcare workers to foster mutual learning, exchange best practices at the EU level, and develop a common framework for drama therapy services.

5. Sharing and promotion

National and European Networking: Promote cooperation between cultural and healthcare organizations to support the creation of innovative learning environments for psychiatric patients, fostering intersectoral and interdisciplinary cooperation.

Project Activities

A) Local Upskilling Laboratories: Implementation of local laboratories to develop skills in psychiatric patients. 

B) Transnational Working Group: Creation of a working group to define a Model for Integrated Management of drama therapy services. 

C) Coordination Forum and Social Inclusion LABS: Networking among stakeholders to exchange knowledge and best practices. 

D) DREAM THEATRE Virtual Cooperation Tool: Development of an interactive tool to support local and transnational networking. 

E) Local Theater Performances: Staging local theater performances involving psychiatric patients to practice acquired skills and experience social inclusion. 

Active Participation of Spect-actors: Involvement of participants as spect-actors during theater rehearsals.
